The Ethics of Climbing Everest

The triumph of mountaineer Mark Inglis, who last week became the first double amputee to climb Everest, has been soured by the news he left a dying climber to his fate. Ethicist Daniel Sokol asks whether he was right to do so. One of Malcolm Bradbury's novels is entitled Eating People is Wrong. In normal circumstances, it is also wrong to abandon dying people. Yet, as the saying goes, "circumstances alter cases" and it is not clear whether New Zealander Mark Inglis, a double amputee, and the 39 other climbers in his group committed a moral wrong by abandoning the expiring David Sharpe on Everest.

Kathmandu-Hetauda Fast Track Road Gets Response

Russian and UN official have shown interest in Kathmandu-Hetauda Fast Track Road (KHFTR). The road has become more significant in the context of Nepal being developed as a transit point between India and China. Prof Hocor B, senior official at the UNESCAP office located in Bangkok, while talking to the Nepali entrepreneurs in Russia recently said, “For Nepal’s economic development, the UN is very much interested in supporting it.� It has shown interest in feasibility study of the Kathmandu-Hetauda Fast Track Road (KHFTR), which needs to be developed through public-private partnership approach to make it sustainable. Kush Kumar Joshi, second vice-president of Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), who led the delegation to Russia informed that Russian investors had shown interest in investing in our Kathmandu-Hetauda Fast Track Road project.

Government to Set Standard to Rank INGOs

The government is all set to categorize the international non-governmental organizations functional in Nepal, for which a ranking process is being determined. Such categorization would help the government ensure catering best services to the INGOs and give legitimacy to their services. In this context, the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare (MoWCSW) recently finalized a draft to categorize the INGOs to know their status, contribution and work areas and to encourage them and provide services and give directions for better results.

Government to Bring Rural Investment Plan

One day after making public the white paper on the status of the national economy, finance minister Dr Ram Sharan Mahat disclosed that the government is planning to bring in a massive rural investment plan. Speaking at Reporters Club on today, Dr Mahat said the proposed plan would emphasise employment and income generation in order to revitalise the rural economy. “The plan will focus on reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure as well as economic activities,� he added. Although Dr Mahat didn’t mention when the plan would come into force, he said that the programme will focus on sustaining peace by means of developmental activities.

Appa Summits Mt Everest For the 16th Time

Setting another world record, renowned mountaineer Appa Sherpa has successfully conquered the world's highest peak for the record sixteenth time Friday morning. Sherpa along with two Sherpas and one American reached atop Mt Everest at around 10.50 a.m. this morning. Appa conquered the peak as a head guide of the American expedition group 'Team No Limit' comprising 12 foreigners and 14 high altitude guides, Ang Tshering Sherpa, president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association and managing director of Asian Trekking, the organizers of the expedition, informed Nepalnews.

Donors Ready to Aid Nepal

Donor community at an exclusive meet called by the finance minister Dr Ram Sharan Mahat disclosed that it is ready to support Nepal financially to rescue its flagging economy and ensure peace. However, donors continue to be unsure about what will happen regarding the negotiations with the Maoists and to the prospects of sustained peace. Security expenditure over the past four years, Dr Mahat pointed out to the donors, has exceeded 3.4 per cent of the total GDP. It is very high for a country like Ne-pal where annual revenues make up only about 13 per cent of GDP. He said that in the current fiscal year, there will be an additional deficit of about Rs 5.1 billion.

Hunger Taking Toll on Children

When many Nepalese go to bed after a full meal, two million children across the country are left in the lurch without anything to bite on while another one million are out of school, hunger being the culprit again. The estimates made by the World Food Program (WFP) have revealed that 47 per cent of the entire populations in the country go hungry on a daily basis. Against this backdrop, the World Food Program, Nepal office is organizing the Walk the World Event (WTW) on May 21st to raise awareness regarding the plight of hungry children in Nepal. The event is an effort of the United Nations to reveal that collective humanitarian works geared towards fund raising and awareness raising that could change the lives of Nepal’s poorest children including that of the world.
