GENEVA, Switzerland – It’s just started in Geneva the CEOP International Implementation Planning Meeting, held on 15-17 September 2008 and hosted by the WCRP Secretariat at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Headquarters building. During the meeting, EvK2Cnr Committee will play a chief role in the session on High Elevations initiative.

NAMCHE, Nepal -- Crouched on the edge of an overhang, looking at his prey. Here's one of the few spectacular photos of a snow leopard living in Nepali forests. The shooting was done by a local photographer, Lhakpa Sonam Sherpa, who managed to immortalize this rare Asian feline near Namche village, in the heart of the Sagarmatha National Park.

NAMCHE -- New and important sighting for the snow leopard in Nepal. For the first time, in fact, members of the research group EvK2Cnr/ NAST have sighted a snow leopard near Ngyrse, about 1 km west of Namche Bazaar, at an altitude of 3,372 m (GPS: 27.80276, 86.70476 ).

BOLOGNA -- After the installation of the Everest-Pyramid ABC-GAW Station at 5079 m asl, along the Khumbu Valley, in February 2006, the station is quite automatically running. A technical check of instruments and quality assurance of data are guaranteed by remote access of every instrument and acquisition system (from Italy and France), but also thanks to Nepalese staff present 365 days per year at Pyramid Laboratory.

LOBUCHE, Nepal – May 15, 2008 will go down in history as an unforgettable day for research and mountain climbing. Undaunted by a snowstorm, Italian mountaineers Silvio “Gnaro” Mondinelli, Marco Confortola and Michele Enzio and Nepali climbers Dawa Tshering Sherpa, Pema Chhosang Sherpa and Thsiri Sherpa of Khumjung, Phura Sherpa of Namche and Phura Sherpa of Walung, installed the world’s highest automatic weather station (AWS) on Everest’s South Col at 8,000 m (26,247 ft.) a.s.l., without using supplemental oxygen. The station is now continuously sending unique, valuable data on the roof of the world’s weather conditions to scientists in Italy in near real time.

Ev-K2-CNR signs an agreement with the Nepal Ministry of Tourism

On November 27, Ev-K2-CNR signed an important agreement with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MOCTCA). The purpose of the agreement is to provide a general understanding and framework in establishing and coordinating new cooperation initiatives regarding the tourism sector in the Sagarmatha National Park (SNP) and its Buffer Zone (BZ).

On October 30th, 2007, a Research Oriented workshop was hosted by the Karakurum International University in Gilgit. The event, organized by Ev-K2-CNR within the HKKH Partnership Project, gathered experts and researchers from Pakistan, Italy and Nepal, and provided the basis for a collective implementation of a number of research activities to be conducted in the Central Karakoram National Park (CKNP). Also several students from the International Karakurum University participated actively to all the sessions.

Sagarmatha National Park: new activities and new challenges for Ev-K2-Cnr

An exceptional number of researchers will be engaged in baseline studies and capacity building activities in the Sagarmatha National Park in September-October, 2007. The researchers, coordinated by Ev-K2-CNR, come mostly from Nepalese research centers and universities, such as the Tribhuvan University, founded in 1959 AD, the first university and the pioneer institute of higher education in Nepal, the Kathmandu University, a more recent public institution dedicated to maintain high standards of academic excellence, and Resources Himalaya, research institute operating as an independent think-tank on biodiversity conservation in the Himalaya region.

Great success in Australia for the Ev-K2-Cnr research on global warming. Here is an interview with Agostino Da Polenza recently published on the Australiasia Scientific Community's Bulletin.

"Nepal, Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park: climatic data by Ev-K2-CNR Committee’s weather stations network elaborated by IRSA-CNR (Water Research Institute, National Research Council), shows that the temperature increase is three times higher at high altitudes than it is at sea level. This confirms the reduction of the glacial surface and the increase of the number of the lakes.

The Regional Partnership Project “Institutional Consolidation for the Coordinated and Integrated Monitoring of Natural Resources towards Sustainable Development and Environmental Conservation in the Hindu Kush-Karakoram-Himalaya region��? is entering the third semester of activities, and the Project Team has just concluded 10 intense days of work to prepare the upcoming activities. The main objectives of this series of meetings were to review the progress of the project, develop a strategy and a plan for the next period, and prepare the document to be submitted and approved by the Project Executive Committee (that was to meet just after the first 10 days of work).

Pietrangelo: the Central Karakorum National Park is going to be created soon

Italy and the mountains of Karakorum are tied up by historical links as well as by recent events. Just a few weeks ago, indeed, it was proclaimed that the Italian Karakorum Trust project, coordinated by the Ev-K2-Cnr Committee, will be one of the main partners of the Government of Pakistan - together with the Hindu-Kush-Karakorum-Himalaya (Hkkh) international partnership project and Wwf Pakistan - for the start up and the management of the Central Karakorum National Park.
