30-05-2006 On the spoors of snow leopard

NAMCHE, Nepal--The carcasses of two tahr were found in Sagarmatha National Park. All signs indicate  presence of the snow leopard.

Som B.Ale , a Nepalese researcher who collaborates with the Ev-K2-CNR Committee on the Snow Leopard project, saw one carcass of two tahr. The carcass had two small holes on its throat, no doubt that snow leopard must have killed it.

A week ago, the feline also killed a young yak calf on a  yak farm another evident sign of the leopard’s presence in the valley between Namche and Phortse in the Sagarmatha National Park.

Prof. Sandro Lovari-Snow Leopard project coordinator- will coordinate the project to Nepali institutions in collaboration with WWF Nepal at the end of the month.

Actually the presence of snow leopard is stabilized in the Nepalese Himalaya areas and before the end of the year an estimation of its number will be completed.
