Ev-K2-CNR signs an agreement with the Nepal Ministry of Tourism

On November 27, Ev-K2-CNR signed an important agreement with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MOCTCA). The purpose of the agreement is to provide a general understanding and framework in establishing and coordinating new cooperation initiatives regarding the tourism sector in the Sagarmatha National Park (SNP) and its Buffer Zone (BZ).

The Tourism sector in Nepal is growing more and more important, and is influencing deeply the life of Nepalese people. While generating employment opportunities, it also exert a lot of pressure of natural resources, local traditional and culture. For these reasons, it is crucial to ensure that tourism promotion is matched with a solid sustainable development strategy, so as to ensure that the direct and indirect benefits are not created with a regrettable price.

Ev-K2-CNR has been active in the Sagarmatha National Park since 1990, with its Pyramid International Laboratory-Observatory high altitude scientific research center, constructed at 5,050 m (16,568 ft.) a.s.l. Over the years, EV-K2-CNR has expand its field of action, and at the moment is active in SNP with a number of projects and activites.

The scope of work of MOCTCA includes the following activities:
- Policy, planning, and implementation of activities regarding tourism and culture
- Promotion and preservation of tourism and culture industries
- Policy-making, implementation, monitoring and evaluations of activities regarding tourism and culture
- Promotion of connection among international organizations related to tourism and culture
- Support to tourism sector, paying particular attention to mountain tourism, travel and trekking agencies
- Preservation and promotion of cultural heritage of the country

Ev-K2-CNR and MOCTCA share the objective of promoting sustainable tourism and improving sustainable livelihoods, especially in the Sagarmatha National Park. Not only. They also share the premise that both the design and the implementation of any intervention should be done through sustainable and environmental friendly processes, giving the equal and proper importance to conservation of natural, cultural and human resources.

Thanks to this agreement, both parties will cooperate designing and implementing activities on sustainable tourism. This agreement represents another important achievement for Ev-K2-CNR, that at the moment is implementing in the Park a number of research activities with the aim of creating a better understanding of the impact of tourism on environment.

For the occasion, a ceremony was held at the Tourism Board premises. On MOCTCA ‘s side, Under Secreaty Mr. K.N.Dhakal, Joint Secretary Mr. Dinesh H. Adhikari and a number of MOCTCA staff attended the event. On Ev-K2-CNR’s side, Field Officer Dr. Marcello Basani and all Ev-K2-CNR local staff (Mr. Hari Kumar Shrestha, Mr. Sudeep Thakuri, Mr. Krishna Das Shrestha) was present, together with Prof. Gianni Tartari, President of Ev-K2-CNR Scientific Committee.
