30-03-07 Success of Ev-K²-CNR in the CEOP
WASHINGTON, Usa -- The section related to high altitude areas (High Elevation – HE) has been officially introduced in the CEOP Phase II. The Ev-K²-CNR Scientific Board President and SHARE Project Coordinator, Dr. Gianni Tartari, came back from Washington, where he recently participated to the International Implementation Planning Meeting CEOP/IGWCO.
Washington meeting confirmed the new CEOP course, with the re-definition of the project from Coordinating Enhanced Observing Period (CEOP) to Coordinated Energy and Water Cycle Observation Project (CEOP), aspiring at becoming the “Project of Projects for the coordination of the main world stations system.
CEOP project provides the IGWCO (Integrated Global Water Cycle Observation programme) with the main scientific data and analyzes the scientific systems for the development of scientific activities such as modelling and satellite observation. The CEOP has a strong connection with climatic and hydrological research, being part of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) through the GEWEX (Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment).
For three years the CEOP and the IGWCO have been holding joint meetings in order to discuss the current status of CEOP research and monitoring activities.
The main CEOP/IGWCO tasks, for the current year, are the following:
- definition of the IGWCO Implementation Plan;
- intensification of interactions between the IGWCO and the Global Earth Observation System of System (GEOSS);
- development of IGWCO new products, initiatives and mechanisms.
“During the Washington workshop, - says Dr. Gianni Tartari – a particular attention was devoted to high altitude monitoring systems, reminding WGHE and CEOP objectives and referring to Himalaya and Karakorum.

“The introduction of the HE section, and therefore of Ev-K²-CNR Epson Weather Station activities in the CEOP panel was really satisfactory. By the beginning of June the WG schedule will be enlarged. Such an evolution aroused a great deal of interaction: even Prof. Ma from the ITP - CAS (Institute for the Tibetan Plateau Research – Chinese Academy of Sciences), contacted us through e-mail to join the initiative.
