Goal
The project is aimed at the conservation of the local culture and artistic patrimony by renovating the monastery of Thaktsen Rabgyal Ling, situated in the Phoksumdo area in Dolpo (Nepal) at an altitude of 3.200 m a.s.l.
Status:Â Â Â Â
History…
About 250 years ago there was a pilgrimage site called Pumer Gompa that was built by Lama Jimpa Gyaltshen (Phalduwa lineage of Dhong Rig), situated within the area of toady's Phoksumdo Village Development Committee Ward 6 Pungmo in Dolpa.Â
After the construction of that Gompa, many Lamas came there and started to study, worship and meditate at this gompa regularly. During those years the important Lamas of the Treton lineage held the main lama position of the Gompa. The Treton lineage had no male offspring and began to diminish. After 160 years the Gompa was getting very old and began to decay.
After them, Lama Namgyal Sherab Gyaltshen of Khyungpo Karpo lineage arrived in Pungmo from a place called Khyungpo in Tibet. He was seen as the reincarnation of Karu Druwang Tenzin Rinchen Lama (born 1801), an important Lama from Tibet who had passed trough Dolpo when he was about 40 years old.Â
Namgyal Sherab Gyaltshen started to stay at the Pumer Gompa and reconstructed it around 120 year ago (about 1885), building a new Gompa joined to the old Gompa. He named it Padma Ling Gompa. It became the community Gompa. The old building was used for as Labrang (main kitchen, sleeping and dinning rooms).
Namgyal Sherab Gyaltshen developed many things of the local Bon religion. As requested by the Pungmo villagers, he became the main Lama of that Gompa. He had several sons. Gekhö Rinchen Gyaltshen, his oldest son, inherited his father's position and became one of the most skillful and famous Lamas in Dolpo.
He was a celibate monk and had no children. Therefore the line continued trough his brother Sherab Gyaltshen, whose son Geshe Sherab Nyima holds today the lineage position. He renamed the Gompa from Padma Ling Gompa to Taktsen Rabyaling (Theg chen rab rgyas gling dgon). Today the four sons of Sherab Gyaltshen and their sons are in charge of the monastery.
Oggi…
Nowadays the old Gompa needs renovation again. The water is leaking from the rooftop. Due to water leakage, the main historical statues and rear paintings on the inside walls are getting damaged. This important and historical Gompa of the Bon tradition, that is still very much in use and alive, must be renovated and conservated.
The works started in the summer of 2005. First the villagers prepared the wood for the roof and the floors. In November the Pungmo villagers started the roof maintenance and made new wooden floors inside, on the second floor.
The very dark hall room with no windows, useless because of the lack of light, was transformed by putting more sky lights and creating partitions to separate three rooms used as meeting room, library and meditation room.
All without changing the outside design of the building. The Gompa is much nicer, but there are still a lot of work to be done.
Take a look at what tomorrow could be, thanks to you…
The first objective is the maintainance of the old roof. Then comes the renovation of the wall paintings, the old statues and masks and the wood boards on the floor. All works will be done by the skillful workers of the Pungmo Village Phoksundo: they have good knowledge about traditional skills and artwork.
1. Maintenance of Kitchen room
2. Doors for the partition of the rooms
3. Big traditional window at the front side on the second floor
4. Bookcase and altar table
5. Renovation of the statues and the wall paintings

Goal
Renovation of the Deboche convent in Sagarmatha National Park (Nepal). The convent is situated at an altitude of 3,820m and hosts about 15 nuns.
 Status:   Â
History…
Benoit Chamoux, the greatest French Himalayan climber, specialized in fast ascensions and solo climbs, died in 1995 at the age of 34, just a few meters from the summit of his 14th 8,000 m peak. This project – like the others of the BC Foundation - is inspired by the strong ties which existed between Benoit and the people of Nepal. The BC Foundation was founded in March 1996 and has been promoting humanitarian and social projects for the people of the Himalayas ever since.
The Deboche Convent for Buddhist nuns is a group of crumbling huts in the middle of the conifer and rhododendron forest at an altitude of 3,800 m, 15 minutes from Tyangboche (today the main Buddhist centre / monastery on the Everest route). About 15 elderly nuns now live in the convent. The survival of this spiritual centre depends on the replacement by a new generation, but young nuns have no accommodation and the health conditions of the convent are precarious.
This project was begun in 2003 to safeguard Deboche’s important religious tradition linked to that of the Tibetan Monastery of Rongbuck. The project aim is to remodel the existing rooms and to create new lodgings. Work is ongoing and subject to delivery of materials, weather conditions and availability of local workforce and volunteers.
Today…
Today, 5 rooms have been remodelled: new walls raised, roof repairs/replacement, window installation, basic furnishings, levelling and settlement of the surrounding land.
By 2005, the second phase of the project should be started (construction of 5 new rooms).
Take a look at what tomorrow could be, thanks to you…
Renovation works are being carried out despite several problems caused by the difficult climatic conditions and geographical position of the convent, making delivery of materials slow.
Every contribution is fundamental. Â

Goal
Provide support for the children of Sherpas who have died during mountaineering expeditions. It is a moral and financial commitment that assures these children will be enrolled in good private boarding schools and finish their compulsory education.
 Status:   Â
The BC Foundation was founded in March 1996 and its main aim is to help Sherpa orphans complete their compulsory education, learning in particular English and computer science.
Today…
Since 1996, 19 fatherless Sherpas have been sponsored and their education provided.
The boys and girls’ progress is monitored from afar and during visits to the boarding schools. Members of the BC Foundation, children’s mothers and teachers oversee the educational curriculum. Ang Rita Sherpa, local representative of the Foundation, Vice-President of the Nepal Sherpa Association and member of the Nepal Mountaneering Association Committee, selects scholarships recipients and administrates their schooling experience.
Take a look at what tomorrow could be, thanks to you…
Sponsoring a little boy or girl to provide full support for his/her studies throughout the entire compulsory school cycle requires a firm moral and financial commitment, but it’s the only way to ensure their future wellbeing while preserving their Sherpa heritage.
The annual commitment for sponsoring one child is € 1,150.00. This amount covers all costs for one year (school supplies, clothes, private boarding schools in Kathmandu). Current donors already cover most needed expenses, but more contributions are needed to bring new fatherless children into the program and cover rising costs.

Goal
Training Sherpa Guides in high altitude/mountaineering Rescue Techniques. The course is conducted by Italian Alpine Guides (instructors) and doctors working with Pyramid Laboratory-Observatory (Nepal, 5.050 m.s.l.m., Lobuche).
 Status:   Â
History…
In spite of their natural physical strength and willingness to help, Sherpa mountaineering guides are generally weak in mountaineering techniques, especially in rescue skills, having rarely received any specific instruction. Improvement of individual capacity and creation of a model for cooperation amongst mountaineers in an organized and working team are high priorities in these regions increasingly visited by less experienced tourists.
In collaboration with the Nepalese Ministry of Tourism, depending on availability of funding from European Organisations (i.e. professional training institutions, National Alpine Rescue Bodies, etc.), the Ev-K²-CNR Committee organizes training courses periodically at the Pyramid Laboratory-Observatory (Nepal, Lobuche, 5050 m a.s.l.) in technical aspects of rescue operations for Sherpa mountaineering guides, following which these Guides will receive the title of Himalayan Rescue Technician (HRT).
 Today…
Thanks to rescue instructors of the Val D’Aosta Union of High Mountain Guides, a pilot course was carried out in autumn 2000 (5 students), and a first full training course was held in spring 2002 (10 students).
The second edition of the course will be held in autumn 2005, in collaboration with the Lombardy Mountain Guides.
The approximately 10-day course is organized in two sessions. Training topics will cover medical, technical and communicational aspects and are divided into low altitude (valley) rescue and high altitude (glacier/mountain) rescue.
Students are selected through the Nepal Ministry of Tourism by the Nepal Mountaineering Association, on request of the Royal Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (RONAST), with input from with the Sir Edmund Hillary Himalayan Trust (HT) and the Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA). Students receive food, lodging and a small per diem.
Ev-K²-CNR aims at annual replication of the course, in late spring or autumn (periods when students are usually less busy) every year.
Take a look at what tomorrow could be, thanks to you…
The final objective of the initiative will be the creation of a team of at least 50 rescue operators in Nepal by the end of 2010, with a Himalayan Rescue Technician working in at least a quarter of the trekking and mountaineering expedition agencies accredited by the Trekking Agents Association of Nepal (470 in 2004). Ready to operate at any time, with proper equipment and in proper psychophysical conditions, the rescue teams will be able to deliver expected service to remote rescue points. Rescue departure locations will be defined near specific local villages.
This is a very important occasion for the local people to acquire specialized skills, but the organization of the course strictly depends upon the annual availability of funds and the voluntary commitment of the Italian instructors.

Goal
Construction of aqueducts for high altitude villages along the access route to K2. These interventions aim at providing drinking water and improving the sanitation for the local people.
 Status:    STARTING
History…
In the villages of the Northern Karakorum valleys, collection, transportation and distribution systems for drinking water are almost non existent. Today, water is collected into small superficial watercourses to produce a surface canalization system. The water is conveyed to the villages by means of an open channel which is also used to carry waste water away from the village. This situation is typical of high altitude settlements, where such systems have been used to transport water and collect waste runoff up until the last century. The situation clearly causes health problems, especially with use of polluted water for cooking.Â
To improve the situation, it was decided that aqueducts carrying clean water to the people living in the villages of the area would be constructed.
Today…
In spring 2004, the first aqueduct was build in Askole, where the “Lorenzo Mazzoleni Medical Dispensary is found. The project was carried out before planting season, and the aqueduct was functioning before the trekking season began (summer), thus not interfering with the agricultural cycle. Excavation, laying and refilling works were carried out by the local population, with cost savings and an emphasis on quality.
Take a look at what tomorrow could be, thanks to you…
Given the success of the pilot project, construction of aqueducts and collection-transport-distribution systems for drinking water in various other villages of the Braldu valley is planned from 2006. Local feasibility inspections will be carried out aimed at selection of villages where the aqueducts will be built.
The project will benefit about 3,000 people living in the area.
You can contribute to the project by:
| Financing – totally or partially – salaries of the local workforce (estimate for one aqueduct) | € 2.400,00 |
| Contributing to the purchase of building materials, pipeline construction and completion of civil works (estimate for one aqueduct) | € 10.000,00 |
| Making a voluntary donation | a scelta |
The commitment of Ev-K²-CNR
Ev-K²-CNR promoted and financed the construction of the Askole aqueduct and is now promoting construction of the other aqueducts. Ev-K²-CNR will coordinate the works, putting to use well-developed skills and established relationships with professionals, local authorities and communities.

Goal
Improvement of health conditions of the people living around Askole (Pakistan), medical assistance in the Karakorum region being almost nonexistent (30% of children die before the age of one due to intestinal and pulmonary diseases).
Status:Â Â Â Â
History…
In 1996, the “Ragni della Grignetta elite climbing club of Lecco and Ev-K²-CNR organized a scientific-mountaineering expedition to K2. The expedition successfully reached its goals, but unfortunately Lorenzo Mazzoleni, a 29-years-old climber, died on descent from the summit. Lorenzo rests among these peaks and these people. To keep his memory alive, a group of people united by the same ideals acted to improve the precarious health conditions of this area, providing medical assistance for the children and populations encountered by Lorenzo on his last expedition through the Baltoro Valley.
Thus, the "Friends of Lorenzo" association was founded. This group set up a medical dispensary in Askole (3,000m), the last village on the K2 access route. This population is in great need of medical care and health education, in particular due to several endemic diseases caused by poor hygiene and other living conditions. Infectious diseases and those affecting respiratory and gastrointestinal functions are the most common among the population. In 1997, medical assistance to the population was started and the medical dispensary was completed in 2003. Today assistance is provided to around two thousand people.
Today…
The 150 sq. m Dispensary comprises a waiting room, separate male and female examination rooms, a medication room, washrooms, storeroom, veranda and lodging for the medical staff. It was built according to local building regulations and is surrounded by a periphery wall. The medical assistance activities of the Askole Medical Dispensary include medication, patient examination, prescription and distribution of medicines, prenatal care, childcare, and health education. The local nurses also provide domiciliary care to the elderly and to expectant women.
The person in charge of the Dispensary is Italian doctor, Mariassunta Lenotti, assisted by other volunteer doctors who take turns every year between April and October, when Askole can be reached by road.
There are two full-time fully trained local nursing staff, who, thanks to the support of the association, also periodically take part in refresher courses. Health education programmes are being carried out for the people living in the area.
.
Take a look at what tomorrow could be, thanks to you…
The lack of funds, medical skills and communications make the facing local health problems extremely difficult. The Dispensary – the only medical-health centre operating in the area – is a concrete answer to the needs of the population. To function, it needs funds for maintenance, medical equipment, periodic refurbishment of medicines, personnel, energy, logistic aspects, and health education for the population.
Every contribution is fundamental.
Â
Doctors or nurses interested in volunteering to work at Askole (for a minimum of 10 days, from April to October) are invited to contact Dr. Mariassunta Lenotti (marlen44@tin.it).Â
Â
You can contribute to the project by:
| Financing a month’s salary of the local nursing staff |  € 150,00 |
| Financing a refresher course for the local nursing staff (5 months) |  € 1.500,00 |
| Financing a series of health lessons for the local population | € 100,00 |
| Buying a package of basic medicines for the dispensary (1 month supply) |  € 70,00 |
| Making a voluntary donation | a scelta |

Ev-K²-CNR has supported the "Friends of Lorenzo" association in managing the Askole Medical Dispensary since 1997, also by promoting the visibility of the initiative.
In 2004, Ev-K²-CNR completed construction of an aqueduct in Askole (started by Doug Scott), providing safe drinking water to the local population. This improved the general health conditions.
Next autumn (2005) the solar panel system will be improved, adding the photovoltaic system used during the K2-2004 expedition (a gift from Ev-K²-CNR) to the existent one.

Goal
Provide local people an opportunity for obtaining better professional qualifications at the mountaineering school, by creating Alpine Guides with specialized technical, linguistic and cultural skills to ensure their sustainable livelihoods.
Guides trained at this school could become future instructors. Until now, theoretical courses have been carried out by Tibetan teaching staff. As of autumn 2005, English will be taught by a mother tongue teacher and technical/mountaineering courses will be started by Italian and international intstructors.
 Status:   Â
History…
All active Tibetan mountaineers work for the Tibetan Mountaineering Association. Most come from poor high altitude regions and have received only limited education. In 2001, Sonam Tsomo, director of the Tibet Mountaineering Association, asked Eco Himal to help them improve their economic conditions and obtain qualifications as Guides at an international level. Thus, a Center for the basic training of Tibetan mountaineers was founded. In 2002, the first course was started, thanks to the contribution of Eco-Himal, Ev-K²-CNR Committee and IMONT. In the courses taught by teachers from the Lhasa University and held at the Tibet Mountaineering Department theory is coupled with practice.
Kurt Diemberger (the only living mountaineer to have first climbed two 8,000 peaks) has accepted to be the leader of this project.
 Today…
The Lhasa Mountaineering Center is hosted in the Tibet Mountaineering Department offices. Nearby, about 10 km far from the capital, is a natural practice wall for rock climbing.
Theory courses include English, mountain rescue and safety practices, environmental protection, history, geography and basic accounting. In the practical courses, students climb on the practice wall and in the mountains under the guidance of international Guides, exchanging information on equipment and climbing techniques. A complete course lasts about 3 years.
The Mountaineering Center is an important hub for keeping students in touch with international expeditions. The first major result of this project was reached in 2004, when the first Guides trained in the Lhasa Mountaineering Center climbed Everest with the K2 2004 expedition.
Take a look at what tomorrow could be, thanks to you…
In 2005 courses will continue and new students will start their training.
The Center is financed wholly with voluntary contributions. Donations pass through a Tibetan NGO: the Tibet Assistance to the Remote Areas –TARA – Program Organization Service (TPOS), led by Prof. Tshering Yangdzom, Lhasa University teacher and course Director.

Goal
Support and expand the Tshome Hospital (4.800m), offering health care for the mostly nomadic people of the area. The most common illnesses of the nomads living in the area are connected with life at high altitudes and the severe cold (temperatures in winter reach -30° C); respiratory diseases (tuberculosis), gastrointestinal diseases (parasitosis and dysentery); ophthalmias and shock. Infant mortality is very high.
Status:Â Â Â Â
History…
Inaugurated in 1999, the Tshome Hospital is located in the Chang Thang, to the North of Brahmaputra, at an altitude of 4800 m. Like most initiatives of Eco-Himal, the project grew out of a local request. It was later presented to and funded by a group of potential donors led by journalist and writer Rolly Marchi. The hospital was dedicated to Fosco Maraini, well-known Italian traveller and writer in Tibet.
Since 2000, Tshome has received funding for infrastructures, building works, electric energy, a jeep-ambulance, medicines, and training courses for medical staff.
The local Government can only partially satisfy the health needs of these areas. Initiatives like the Tshome Hospital can make up for the lack of basic services and are often carried out by local authorities together with international organizations.
Today…
The hospital helps about 30,000 people. There is only one doctor (Dr. Namka), assisted by two nurses. They take care of common illnesses like bronchitis, ophthalmias and dysentery which, at this altitude, can become life-threatening, while also providing basic assistance during childbirth. Both western and Tibetan medicine are used, according to the patients’ desires and the doctor’s evaluation.
The main building comprises two examination rooms, a warehouse and 6 beds. Two smaller buildings stand in the courtyard and host the medical staff and patients. The nomads often reach the hospital with their tents and stay there. Twice a year, Dr. Namka travels in the area to assist those who are not able to reach the hospital on their own. It is currently not possible for foreign volunteers to work at Tshome Hospital.
Take a look at what tomorrow could be, thanks to you…
Even if Tshome Hospital is a functioning structure, funds are always needed for repairs, medicines and training courses. Logistic problems, the altitude and extreme poverty of the area make management even more difficult.
