Agostino Da Polenza
Agostino Da Polenza was born in Bergamo on August 28th, 1955 and currently lives there.
In 1974 begun its long mountaineering career, taking part to the expedition in the Cordillera of Huayhuash (Perù). The year after he climbed the breathtaking South wall of the Huandoy with his friend Renato Casarotto.
In 1983, after a long and strenuous training, he finally reached the summit of K2 (8.611 m) by climbing the difficult North side. In that worked also as a manager consolidating a very precise choice of life: the professional mountaineering.
In 1984 he founded "Quota 8000", the first plan integrated of mountaineering, culture and communication, playing the role of director until 1987. This team climbed Gasherbrum I and II, again the K2 - but from the South side - and the "mythical" Nanga Parbat (8125 m).
In 1988 he founded and directed – together with Benoit Chamoux - the "Esprit d' Equipe" – BULL project: the most important team project ever sponsored in the history of mountaineering. In three years, the summits of Annapurna (8,091 m), Manaslu (8,163 m), Cho-Oyu (8,201 m) and Shisha Pangma (8,046 m) were climbed.
In 1989, together with Professor Ardito Desio, he founded and has directed ever since the Ev-K²-CNR Committee. This same year, Da Polenza became the logistic manager of Ev-K²-CNR project and of the "Pyramid" observatory-laboratory working on a variety of scientific and technological projects in the Himalayas and Karakorum.
In 1998 he started the initiatives that had carried to the proclamation of the 2002 International Year of Mountains by founding in Bergamo (Italy) the Italian Committee for this celebration and carrying out an appreciated action at both national and international level.
Agostino Da Polenza is also member of the Austo-Italian "Eco-Himal" an association for the protection of the Himalayan culture. He is a member of C.A.I., of the élite climbing group "Ragni della Grignetta" of Lecco and of various teams such as CAI-CONI, CNR-CONI. He is Consul of the Italian Touring Club and has been titled "Cavaliere" of the Italian Republic for sport merits.
