Ungdi Tshering Sherp, another physically disabled
man is preparing to inscribe his name in the world
record book along with Weihenmeyer and Whittaker
who were disable persons, the one blind and the
other without legs, respectively climbed Mt. Everest
2 years ago.
Mr. Sherpa is preparing to climb the Mt. Everest
this year on the occasion of the golden jubilee
year of the successful ascent of Mount Everest.
It was Whittaker, whom Ungdi met at the Tribhuvan
International Airport nearly two years ago and
since then is in a constant touch, who inspired
and instilled aspirations and courage in this
handless Sherpa cheated by fate.
The man is going to scale Mount Everest with his
artificial hookers that were kindly offered by
a British couple Simon and Vittoria Thornley.
Born at the foothills of Makalu in the eastern
hill district of Sankhuwasabha in 1971, his expedition,
named as "Differently Able Sherpa Everest Expedition
2003", has been supported by Pasang Lhamu Expedition
Foundation (PLEF).
Mr. Sherpa, the father of two sons, who lost
his both hands nearly five year ago to an electric
shock. Four Sherpas will accompany the 32-year
old trekking guide to ensure the success of the
attempt and try to inscribe yet another summit
record. "I will be successful if weather and
time during the expedition belong to me. "I have
experience of more than fifteen years in mountaineering,
as porter and a guide. Even after losing the hands
I have been to many trekking expeditions. I mounted
the 6,000-metre high Nayakhnag peak in Rasua district
in last November, 2002," he shared his confidence
with The Kathmandu Post.
With just 20 days remaining for preparations before
he finally sets out for the expedition, he will
be busy next few days to raise fund. He said that
he is still short of more than one million rupees.
But he is hopeful that he will be successful in
getting the required fund.
The number of expedition team registered to climb
the Everest is 18 till now.
